Datuk Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad, who is the deputy Housing and Local Government minister had said that Umno and PAS have been told to stop fanning racial and religious tensions by playing up the International Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Racial Discrimination (ICERD) issue.
He told press conference at the Parliament Lobby today (19th November 2018) that it was impossible for the country to ratify ICERD without any amendments to the Federal Constitution.
“Without a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, how can we ratify it?
“Why can’t the lawyers tell the public that ICERD would be impossible to ratify unless Umno and PAS support it,” he said.
PAS and UMNO should be focusing on the drug problems rampant in the states that they manage. It was also been reported that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had said that it is almost impossible to ratify ICERD as amending would require two-thirds majority from both the government and the Opposition party.
Raja Kamarul Bahrin had quoted figures from the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK), saying Kelantan, Pahang and Terengganu have the highest number of drugs addicts recorded in the country.
“As of September, this year, AADK recorded a total 16,918 cases in Kelantan, 16,150 in Pahang and 10,576 in Terengganu.
“They should focus on eradicating drug problems among the Malays instead of fanning religious and racial tension,” he said.
The protest staged by PAS and UMNO would create a rift and spread hatred as it portrays ICERD as threat to the special position of Malays and the natives of Sabah and Sarawak according to Raja Kamarul Bahrin. He reiterated that the government would properly research ICERD and if it is against the constitution, it would never be accepted.
