Amidst a heated legal battle concerning her ongoing conservatorship, Britney Spears took to Instagram to launch a searing attack against some of her family members. Britney singled out her sister Jamie Lynn as well as her father Jamie for particular criticism.
In an Instagram post, Britney wrote, “I don’t like that my sister showed up at an awards show and performed MY SONGS to remixes!!!!!” This quote referred to two of Jamie Lynn’s live performances. The first took place in Georgia in 2013. During that performance, Jamie Lynn performed an acoustic version of Oops!… I Did It Again.
In 2017, Jamie Lynn performed Till the World Ends at the Radio Disney Music Awards. This was particularly galling for Britney because the performance was initially intended to honour Britney’s winning of the Icon Award.
Britney also made it clear that she refuses to resume live performances of her own as long as her father Jamie remains the conservator of her estate. According to Jamie’s attorney Vivian Lee Thoreen. Jamie has no intention of stepping down from the position.
“For those of you who choose to criticize my dancing videos… I’m not gonna be performing on any stages anytime soon with my dad handling what I wear, say, do, or think,” she wrote. “I’ve done that for the past 13 years…I’d much rather share videos… …from my living room instead of onstage in Vegas.”
Britney also mentioned how her support system and family failed her. She wrote that the conservatorship put an end to many of her dreams. Britney added that many around her had been trying to extinguish any glimmer of hope she might have had.
Britney’s criticism of her sister came as a surprise to many. This is because Jamie Lynn had always been one of Britney’s most outspoken advocates. In an Instagram Stories post, Jamie Lynn commented, “The only reason I haven’t before is because I felt like until my sister is able to speak for herself and say what she felt she needed to say publicly, that it wasn’t my place or it wasn’t the right thing to do. Now that she has very clearly spoken and said what she needed, I feel like I can follow her lead and say what I feel I need to say.”
“I can assure you I have supported my sister long before there was a hashtag and I’ll support her long after,” she added.
Britney’s conservatorship began in 2008. However, since then, her father has often misused his status as conservator, prompting Britney to charge him with abuse of the conservatorship. Jamie became the sole conservator of Britney’s estate after co-conservator Bessemer Trust resigned.
