French fashion house Dior released its 2022 Croisière collection in Athens on Sunday. Athens, the capital city of Greece, was chosen as the location because the collection’s designs are inspired by ancient and traditional Greek clothing and culture. The presentation took place at the Panathenaic Stadium.
The event was attended by several celebrities including actresses Anya Taylor Joy and Catherine Deneuve as well as model Cara Delevingne. Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the President of Greece, was also in attendance.
The Croisière collection featured much work originally created by Greek artisans and local brands. Examples of the artisans and local brands who had some of their work featured in the collection included Tsalavoutas, a maker of caps and hats based in Piraeus, Aristeidis Tzonevrakis, a tailor and embroiderer from Argos, and Silk Line, a silk factory located in Soufli.
According to a statement released by Dior, this event was intended to highlight how “the inspirations of the collection (combine) the power of heritage with contemporary inventiveness.”
The location of the Panathenaic Stadium was chosen due to its connections to freedom of movement and the body. On the venue, Dior said, “The choice of this venue, creating a prodigious bridge between sport, culture, ancient heritage, and contemporary youth, is highly symbolic.” Dior also mentioned that the motifs closely related to the collection as well as the collection’s sportswear spirit also played a role in the venue selection.
Dior also mentioned that the peplos was one of the primary inspirations for much of the clothing on display. The peplos is a traditional Greek full-body garment which is worn by women.
The Croisière collection will also feature several sportswear pieces and suits. Pants and jackets which actress Marlene Dietrich once wore serve as their inspiration.
Upcoming Photo Shoots
Dior plans to hold photo shoots in five different locations across Greece. Three of these locations are in Athens. They are the Ancient Agora, the Acropolis of Athens, and the Odeon of Herodotus Atticus. The other two locations are the Temple of Zeus in Olympia and the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion.
This series of photo shoots will come 70 years after an iconic Dior photo shoot at the Acropolis. Commenting on this, Dior creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri said, “We are very proud to be here. When I arrived (at) Dior, I found the archive and I said (that) one day it would be great to realize again this trip (to) Greece. In some ways, it’s an anniversary.”
Chiuri also spoke positively about the recent return of crowds to Dior events. She said, “We worked a lot with video, film, but it’s completely different to have an audience at our fashion show. It’s like a concert. The guests are part of the show with us.”
