Three separate police raids in Batu Pahat and Kluang led to the seizure of almost RM50,000 worth of drugs. Four people were also arrested in conjunction with these raids.
According to Batu Pahat OCPD Assistant Commissioner Ismail Dollah, the raids took place between 7:30am and 8pm on Sunday. These raids were conducted near Sri Gading in Batu Pahat and Simpang Renggam in Kluang.
In a statement made in Batu Pahat on Sunday, Ismail said, “Three men and one woman between the ages of 30 and 40 were also arrested. “Among the drugs confiscated are 284.45 grams of (methamphetamine), 572.45 grams of heroin, and 14.5g of (nimetazepam). The total street value of the drugs is estimated to be about RM49,320.75.”
Ismail added that the police seized a Toyota Hilux four-wheel drive vehicle as well as RM1,500 in cash during the raids. The arrests were made after tip-offs as well as investigations conducted by the police.
Commenting on the four people who were arrested, Ismail said, “All four suspects have criminal records and will be remanded for seven days starting from June 13 for further investigations.” He added that the case is to be investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Those convicted of relevant crimes may face either the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping.
This is not the most high-profile drug case to occur in Batu Pahat recently. In April, nine people were arrested there for alleged involvement in an international drug trafficking syndicate. That case involved the seizures of 12.24 kilograms of methamphetamine, 6.61 kilograms of ecstasy pills, and 420 grams of ketamine. In addition, the police confiscated three luxury vehicles and jewellery with a cumulative value of RM1.39 million.
The syndicate had been smuggling drugs through Batu Pahat and other locations in Johor to Indonesia. It was believed to have ties to a drug gang which was arrested by authorities in Taiwan. The Taiwanese police did so in March.
Last year, a separate drug trafficking syndicate based in Batu Pahat was also busted by police. The series of raids last year saw the arrests of seven people. In those raids, a total of RM806,305 worth of drugs were seized. These drugs included 27.696 kilograms of heroin, 5.753 kilograms of methamphetamine, 1,800 nimetazepam pills, 870 ecstasy pills, and 170 Yaba pills.
During those raids, a loaded CZ75 pistol, five cars, and jewellery were also seized. Cash valued at RM267,545.50 was also confiscated.
That syndicate had been operating for around two years prior to the raids. The drugs had been intended to be used by local consumers.
