The iconic television series franchise Law & Order will soon debut Law & Order: For the Defense, a series which will be its latest spinoff. The upcoming introduction of this spinoff was confirmed after NBC gave a straight-to-series order of Law & Order: For the Defense on Monday.
Information About Law & Order: For the Defense
The new series will take an inside look at a criminal defense firm. Episodes are projected to be aired once a week. Storylines in each episode will reportedly focus on defense attorneys as well as the general justice system of the United States. Every episode’s storyline will reportedly be delivered in the form of a contemporary morality tale.
Law & Order: For the Defense will be the eighth series to be part of the Law & Order franchise. The original series debuted in 1990. Since then, the following television series have been aired: Special Victims Unit, Criminal Intent, Trial by Jury, LA, True Crime, and Organized Crime. Of these seven series, only Special Victims Unit and Organized Crime are currently airing.
Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, will co-produce Law & Order: For the Defense alongside Wolf Entertainment. These production deals originate from Wolf’s and Mendelsohn’s own deals with the studio.
Remarks from Those Working on the Show
Law & Order franchise creator and executive producer Dick Wolf expressed his eagerness to begin work on the new program. In an announcement on Monday, he said, “This new show is exciting for me personally. We spent the last 30 years on shows that played offense. Now it will be great to play defense, and being able to do it with (show runner) Carol (Mendelsohn) is an honour and an opportunity for both of us to do television that hasn’t been done before.”
NBCUniversal Television and Streaming’s President of Scripted Programming Lisa Katz voiced her optimism about the show’s prospects. She said, “We can’t wait to bring audiences the latest chapter of Law & Order, which will explore a different angle of the criminal justice system. We’re excited about Dick Wolf’s perpetually thought-provoking approach as well his collaboration with Carol Mendelsohn. (We) have been eager to do a series with (her) for a long time.”
Some television critics noted that the new series will be well-timed. This is because of recent events involving police officers in the United States. For example, Jeff Sneider wrote, “Change is clearly long overdue, both within law enforcement and Hollywood’s depictions of law enforcement, and it would be naïve for any TV producer to just forge ahead with the status quo.”
Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, meanwhile, commented on how the series would highlight the plight of defendants in the United States. He wrote, “(Perhaps) For the Defense will be able to shed light on the many defendants that are often at the mercy of district attorneys and police officers that possess tremendous power.”
