French luxury fashion house Saint Laurent released a new video titled French Water. It stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Indya Moore, Chloë Sevigny, and Julianne Moore. The video is intended to promote Saint Laurent’s women’s Summer 2021 collection.
The video of nine minutes begins with Julianne Moore and Sevigny looking for Gainsbourg after the conclusion of a party. The duo are soon joined by Indya Moore at the event. While all of this is taking place, Gainsbourg intermittently appears in various scenes. Also starring in the video is Leo Reilly, who plays the role of a waiter. His most notable scene is one in which he serves water to the women. Throughout the short film, the women wear a variety of items from the Summer 2021 collection.
The director of the video is Jim Jarmusch, who is best known for directing comedy film Stranger than Paradise. The video’s art director was Anthony Vaccarello, the creative director of Saint Laurent.
A press release about French Water stated the following: “The dinner party is over. A lone waiter is watching guests search for Charlotte. The echoes of their whispers multiply. Anthony Vaccarello chose Jim Jarmusch to orchestrate a dreamy, surreal ballet, following his own rules. Mysterious, elusive Charlotte keeps disappearing, and reappearing. Tangled until creating a form of vertigo, space and time spin beautifully. Into eternity.”
French Water is Saint Laurent’s second promotional video in the last four months. In December, the fashion house released Summer Of ‘21, a video which also promoted its Summer 2021 collection. It was an eight-minute video which starred Charlotte Rampling. The director of Summer Of ‘21 was Gaspar Noé.
Summer Of ‘21 was not Noé’s first time working with Saint Laurent. In 2019, Noé directed Lux Æterna, a 51-minute film which premiered at that year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Saint Laurent revealed its Summer 2021 collection in December last year. It did so after withdrawing from Paris Fashion Week, instead preferring to devise its own timeline for revealing the details of its 2021 collection. It was the first major fashion house to pull out from Paris Fashion Week. Saint Laurent’s decision to withdraw was influenced by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
In recent times, Saint Laurent has favoured the use of video to advertise its collections. Last September, the fashion house released a video promoting its Spring 2021 men’s collection. In that video, several models were seen leaping over rooftops and landing on a raised runway attached to a tower. This collection closely adhered to Vaccarello’s aesthetic preferences which were influenced by the fashion scene of California.
