Legendary rapper DMX has been confirmed to be on life support after suffering from a heart attack. DMX’s lawyer Murray Richman stated that the rapper was being treated at White Plains Hospital in Westchester, New York.
Commenting on the incident, Richman said, “He had a heart attack. He’s quite ill. I’m very sad about it, extremely sad. He’s like my son. He’s just a tremendous person, tremendous entertainer, tremendous human being. And so much to offer, so much to say. Not the run-of-the-mill rapper. A person of great depth.”
Richman could neither confirm nor deny any reports that DMX, 50, suffered the heart attack because he had overdosed on drugs. He emphasized that the cause of the heart attack remains unknown for the time being.
Reactions on Social Media
News of DMX’s heart attack rapidly spread among other luminaries of the music world and beyond. Many took to social media to express their support for DMX.
Andrew Barber, the owner of hip hop blog Fake Shore Drive, tweeted, “DMX’s story is so heartbreaking. He was truly one of the most captivating artists of my lifetime. It’s hard to explain just how massive he was in the late 90s/early 00s. He touched people in ways I can’t explain. Prayers up for the legend.”
LL Cool J, who collaborated with DMX on a 1997 song titled 4, 3, 2, 1, said this on an Instagram post: “Today is 4/3/21 – it’s only right that we celebrate the talent and genius of my brother @DMX on the 4, 3, 2, 1 song. We Love you X. (Get) well fast.”
DMX, born as Earl Simmons, has released eight studio albums over an extremely successful career dating back to 1998. Five of these albums reached #1 on the Billboard 200 chart. These five albums were It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, …And Then There Was X, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, The Great Depression, and Grand Champ.
DMX has received three Grammy Award nominations. He was nominated for Best Rap Album and Best Rap Solo Performance in 2001 as well as Best Rap Solo Performance in 2002.
The speculation over the cause of DMX’s heart attack stems from the fact that he has battled substance abuse for many years. According to DMX, he has been addicted to crack cocaine for 36 years. He has also been in and out of drug rehabilitation centres on multiple occasions. During the most recent of these instances in 2019, DMX cancelled a series of live performances to check himself into rehab. It is neither known if he has since relapsed nor the severity of the relapse if he has done so.
