Singer Halsey received a wave of support from her fans after she updated her pronouns on her social media accounts on Saturday. According to her Instagram page, her pronouns are now “she/they”. This means that she may either be referred to with the pronoun sets “she/her/her” or “they/them/their”.
Although Halsey, 26, did not make any public statement or announcement regarding the matter, their fans quickly took notice of the update. Many were quick to express their support for an act which highlighted Halsey’s willingness to come forth about this relatively uncommon yet important decision.
The Reaction of Halsey’s Fans
One Twitter user commented, “I hope Halsey changing their pronouns gives others the confidence to express what also makes them feel comfortable. It’s okay to not fit into the categories society puts you in.”
On Instagram, one of Halsey’s more than 23 million followers wrote, “This means so (censored) much to me because I’ve been struggling (with) my gender identity so much lately.”
It did not take long for Halsey to acknowledge the widespread support she received. In response, they took to Instagram, making a post on a simple black background to thank their fans for their support of their choice.
Several other celebrities have begun to use “they” pronouns after coming to terms with their own gender and sexual identities. Some of these celebrities include Sam Smith, Nico Tortorella, Elliot Page, and Indya Moore; they identify as non-binary. While not every non-binary person chooses to use “they” pronouns, many do so because their identities are not part of the gender binary.
Halsey is currently expecting her first child with boyfriend Alev Aydin. She recently took to Instagram to explain how her identity outside the gender binary related to her pregnancy. She wrote, “I thought pregnancy would give me very strong, binary feelings about ‘womanhood’ but truly it has leveled my perception of gender entirely. My sensitivity to my body has made me hyper-aware of my humanness and that’s all. Doing a remarkable thing. And it’s grand. I hope the feeling lasts.”
Halsey’s pregnancy was a matter of great personal significance to them because of their past struggles with fertility. In 2018, she suffered from endometriosis. That same year, she was also interviewed about the prospect of freezing her eggs.
“Doing ovarian reserve is important for me, because I’m fortunate enough to have that as an option, and I need to be aggressive about protecting my fertility (and) about protecting myself,” she said during the interview.
“(I am) taking these measures to make sure that I get to have a hopefully bright future and achieve the things that I want to achieve by doing the ovarian reserve,” she added.
