Fifteen families had to be evacuated following the collapse of the Sungai Kelantan riverbank and a subsequent landslide. These incidents occurred near Dataran Air Muleh near Pasir Mas, Kelantan.
According to Assistant Commissioner Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif, the police chief of the district of Pasir Mas, local police forces received information about a small crack in the road near the location of the incident. They were alerted of this matter at 10:30pm on Tuesday. A landslide would then occur several hours later. This landslide took place between 2:30am and 6:30am yesterday.
Speaking to reporters at the site of the landslide yesterday, Mohamad Roy said, “The incident caused the river to break its bank, (leaving) a house destroyed and eight others on the verge of collapse, but there were no casualties reported.”
He added that in the wake of the landslide, 15 families received the instruction to evacuate as soon as possible. These 15 families included a total of 50 people. Mohamad Roy went on to mention that authorities closed all exit and entry roads into and away from the village. The instability of the land as well as any potential land movements continued to pose a danger for those in the area.
Darohaimi Ahmad, a 46-year-old resident, claimed to be asleep at the time of the incident. At around 5:30am, she said that she felt a tremor.
“When I awoke and looked out the window, I was shocked to see the landslide nearing my house,” she said. “I have been living here with my husband and three children for the past 21 years (but) I have never seen anything like this.” Darohaimi will be relocating to her family home until further notice.
Datuk Hanifa Ahmad’s Comments
Datuk Hanifa Ahmad, the Kelantan State Executive Council member responsible for industry, trade, investment, and entrepreneurial development, said that the incident probably occurred after the riverbank experienced an excessive level of erosion. “According to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), the landslide involved a 100-metre stretch and villagers must remain vigilant as the earth movement is still happening,” he said.
Hanifa, a PAS member who currently serves as the Pengkalan Pasir assemblyman, added, “I have urged the DID to lodge an immediate report to enable repair works and the residents’ representative has been told to gather data on the families involved for the provision of immediate assistance.”
Hanifa also mentioned that he had contacted Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yaakob as well as the district council. He did so in the hope that these figures would be able to arrange temporary shelter for the victims. He expects the victims to relocate to the Pasir Mas district hall for the time being.
