Muhyiddin Yassin demanded that Umno Supreme Working Council member Mohd Puad Zarkashi publicly apologize and pay RM10 million in damages for allegedly defaming the prime minister through a post on Facebook last week.
In a letter of demand sent by law firm Rosli Dahlan Saravana Partnership to Puad yesterday, Muhyiddin, among others, demanded that Puad delete the statement dated Feb 9 on quarantine from his Facebook page.
The claim was made against Puad’s statement that Muhyiddin refused to be quarantined upon his return from an official visit from Jakarta on Feb 5 until the government had to gazette a three-day quarantine order against the minister.
“We are instructed that the statement contains false, baseless and malicious information,” according to a letter of demand signed by lawyer Muhyiddin.
The law firm was also instructed to demand that Puad state his apology openly and immediately posted on his Facebook page and all news portals and social media outlets that published the allegedly defamatory statement.
In addition, Puad is also required to issue a written undertaking not to repeat or publish the same or similar statement in any way.
“We are instructed to claim to agree to pay compensation to our client a sum of RM10 million and if we fail to fulfill the claim within seven days from the date of this letter, then we will take legal action against you,” he said.
It is understood that the letter of claim was sent via e-mail and also handed over to Puad by hand.
On Feb 9, the Prime Minister’s Office in a statement vehemently denied the defamation made by Puad that the three-day quarantine order for ministers visiting abroad was gazetted by the government because the prime minister refused to be quarantined on his return from an official visit to Indonesia.
