Sabah Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Bung Moktar Radin said the party was targeting at least 14 parliamentary seats to contest in the next 15th general election (GE-15).
The target was made based on the 14 seats they contested in GE14, namely in Kudat, Kota Belud, Sepanggar, Papar, Kimanis, Beaufort, Sipitang, Tenom, Beluran, Libaran, Kinabatangan, Silam, Semporna, and Kalabakan.
The target is also based on the party’s study through the Sabah Umno Election Affairs (Champion) Department with a research secretariat chaired by Tanjung Keramat ADUN, Shahelmey Yahya.
“Research leads to the strength of the people’s support for Umno and BN in the seats demanded.
“It will be implemented in the near future and as a result of the report, we will finalize which seats will be contested by Umno and BN,” he said when met after chairing the Sabah Umno Champion meeting at the party headquarters, yesterday.
Also present were Sabah Umno Deputy Chairman, Yakub Khan; Sabah Umno Secretary, Jafry Ariffin; and Sabah Umno GE-15 Director, Salleh Said Keruak.
Bung also said that negotiations with the party in the Sabah People’s Coalition (GRS) should also be done transparently and as soon as possible.
“Preliminary negotiations with BN and GRS need to be done transparently based on the strength of their respective parties and it needs to be decided early and not wait for the last minute to face GE-15.
“In GE15, we want to win and establish a government instead of contesting to brag. Therefore, every seat that will be contested must be scrutinized based on geo-politics and the wishes of the voters, “he said.
Sabah has 25 parliamentary seats and if Umno and BN contest in 14 seats, this means there are only 11 seats left to be distributed to other parties in the GRS.
