Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin needs to direct Health Minister Dr Adham Baba to withdraw the relaxation of quarantine orders to ministers returning from abroad, said veteran DAP leader Lim Kit Siang.
According to him, Muhyiddin needs additional to keep his promise that does not stay in the question of compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP) to fight the Covid-19 epidemic.
Lim raised Muhyiddin’s special message on October 6, 2020, which, among others, said he himself was no exception to being subject to the SOP, and would take stern action against those who denied it.
“(So) Is the prime minister’s promise no name difference if the health minister can now gazette different services in compliance with the Covid-19 quarantine SOP for ministers?
“It made the prime minister’s assertion in October last year not to make any sense at all.
“What is at stake now is the ‘warm air’ health minister’s credibility as he no longer has the minister’s credibility, but the prime minister’s own credibility – whether it is better than the health minister’s credibility,” he said in a statement today.
Yesterday, Dr Adham issued an order easing the quarantine rules from 10 to three days for the cabinet to return to visit official offices abroad.
The order is called “Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases (Exceptions) 2021” published in the Federal Gazette signed by Adham and effective today.
Many have already objected to the relaxation, saying it requires health and even bias.
Earlier, Adham defended the gazetting by insisting on a three-day quarantine time only if the minister really chose the “travel program bubble” (travel bubble), not related to any official program.
“Every Cabinet minister needs to apply for approval from the Prime Minister and the Cabinet before going abroad. For this purpose, only a bubble of strict travel programs is allowed.
“I will make an assessment and if they comply with the work visit schedule, they will have to undergo (quarantine) 10 days. This is clear,” he was quoted as saying by the CodeBlue website.
Meanwhile, Lim also quoted Muhyiddin as saying that he would “start using canes” against those who violated the law related to Covid-19.
He said, now will Muhyiddin use “rattan” on his own health minister.
He added that the easing would erode the people’s trust and confidence in the government in an effort to curb the Covid-19 epidemic, at a time when the element should be a priority for the government at this time.
“(But) the government is doing something different – doing everything that could further undermine the people’s trust, confidence, and support as it did with the new quarantine rules for ministers.
“Muhyiddin must also remember the guarantee of the Constitution which guarantees equality for all Malaysians as enshrined in Article 8 of the Federal Constitution,” he added.
