Minister of International Trade and Industry, Azmin Ali, urged the government to consider alternative options that do not lead to the full closure of economic activities to curb Covid-19.
He said, the country’s economy does not have “on” and “off” switches that can be restored just like that.
“In this case, the recent call to re-implement full closure to address the surge in large cases when this third wave should be seen with other suggestions on strategies and other options,” he said in a statement on his Facebook.
Azmin said, losing income for someone who earns a living has a negative impact on their lives.
In the meantime, he suggested the government tighten the SOP, including clear guidelines on the number of individuals allowed to be in business premises.
He said the government needed to increase targeted screening tests as well as streamline the financing of RTK-Antigen test equipment to make Covid-19 testing more affordable and on a larger scale, especially for industry.
