Pakatan Harapan (PH) submitted its name to join the independent committee to give recommendations to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong regarding the implementation of the emergency.
In a joint statement issued by the PH Secretariat Council today, three names are proposed.
They are Kulim Bandar Baharu Member of Parliament Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Anthony Loke (Seremban) and Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad (Kuala Selangor).
However, according to the statement, the participation of opposition representatives in the independent committee involved did not change PH’s stance that the reasons given by the prime minister regarding the need for emergency were unacceptable.
“We as well as the majority of MPs also remain with the stand that this emergency needs to be ended and parliament needs to convene immediately,” he said.
According to the PH Secretary’s Council statement, a letter informing the names was sent to the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Takiyuddin Hassan today.
For the record Saifuddin is the secretary general of PKR, while Loke is now the secretary of the DAP organization. Dzulkefly is the former PH health minister and is currently appointed as the trust’s strategic director.
The formation of the independent committee was to allow Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah to be the body that proposed if the emergency implementation should be terminated earlier.
According to the original declaration, the current emergency should have ended on August 1, unless the Agong thinks otherwise.
During that period, the constitution and parliament were also suspended.
The move has received criticism from various quarters and some consider it to be made to save United President Muhyiddin Yassin who no longer has the support of the majority of MPs.
Earlier, Muhyiddin assured that a general election would be held after the committee decided that Covid-19 had fully recovered and it was safe to implement.
