Anwar Ibrahim said, as a sensible and responsible prime minister, Muhyiddin Yassin should resign, instead of proposing an emergency implementation.
He said, resigning is the most appropriate step that Muhyididn needs to take after realizing the support for him in the Dewan Rakyat is increasingly fragile.
The PKR president said it would enable the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to elect a Member of Parliament who has the majority support to be appointed as the new prime minister.
Anwar slammed Muhyiddin for using the Covid-19 epidemic as a ploy to propose a declaration of emergency to maintain power.
“When Muhyiddin chose to retain power after learning it was eroded by the loss of MPs’ support, then he chose to submit an emergency motion, even though the operation of Covid-19 can be done by movement control order, PKP is conditional on additional measures and takes into account the views of medical and security experts.
“But, Muhyiddin chose the short, desperate and irresponsible path to propose a state of emergency,” he said.
Earlier, Padang Rengas Member of Parliament, Nazri Aziz, withdrew his support for the Muhyiddin-led National Alliance government.
He is the third Umno MP to do so, after Machang Member of Parliament Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub and Gua Musang Member of Parliament Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah announced they no longer supported the PN government.
Asked whether the declaration of emergency caused the opposition’s intention to form a new closed government, Anwar said it was a misinterpretation.
“What is not there is the Parliament line. That is indeed stuck because Muhyiddin is afraid of facing the statement of losing the power of support among Members of Parliament, then (the government) falls.
“So, there is no provision that prevents us from getting support and presenting to the Agong.”
Earlier, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong consented to the emergency being implemented until August 1 or earlier date, if the number of daily cases of Covid-19 can be controlled and lowered effectively.
