Fans of iconic HBO sitcom Sex and the City were left irate after it was revealed that its upcoming reboot will not feature the character of Samantha Jones. Samantha, a character portrayed by Kim Cattrall during the show’s original 1998-2004 run, was arguably the most popular of all the show’s characters.
Fans’ Reactions
Cattrall, 64, has thus far declined to comment on her character’s absence from the reboot. However, many of her fans took to social media to vent their fury on the issue. One Twitter user commented, “Sex (and the) City doing a new series without Samantha is like Destiny’s Child making a comeback without Beyoncé.”
Another fan sarcastically posted the following tweet: “Don’t kill off Samantha in the Sex (and the) City, give Kim Cattrall her own spin-off show called Sex And The Other City set in London. She plays an agent for British movie stars, getting pissed in Soho with the gays and sleeping with corrupt politicians.”
It has been speculated that Cattrall’s and thus Samantha’s absence from the reboot was triggered by a long-running feud with former co-star Sarah Jessica Parker. Parker, 55, had previously posted a teaser trailer of the reboot on her Instagram account. Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis, who both starred in the show’s original iteration and will once again do so, also shared Instagram posts of their own.
Parker and Cattrall’s Feud
Rumours about a feud between Parker and Cattrall first emerged while the original show was still airing. These rumours gained traction over the years and seemingly came to a head when Cattrall declined to act in a third Sex and the City movie.
Many netizens noted the fact that Parker did not tag Cattrall in her Instagram post. However, Parker was quick to claim that her lack of acknowledgment of Cattrall implied a dislike for the Liverpool-born actress.
“No. I don’t dislike her. I’ve never said that. Never would,” she said. Parker added, “Samantha isn’t part of this story. But she will always be part of us. No matter where we are or what we do.”
However, Parker’s remarks stood somewhat in contrast to Cattrall’s comments when she was interviewed on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories in 2017. During that interview, she claimed to have a lack of friendship with her co-stars. Commenting on her relationship with Parker, Cattrall said that the two regarded each other as mere colleagues and nothing more.
The original version of Sex and the City became a pop-culture phenomenon over the course of its six-season run. Adapted from Candace Bushnell’s 1997 book of the same title, the series spawned two future films and received 89 nominations for major awards, winning 18 of them.
