Dr Mahathir Mohamad said, PKR President, Anwar Ibrahim still failed to serve as prime minister despite previously claiming to have a majority to form a federal government.
The former prime minister said the people knew that after Anwar acted to sideline him and his group to get involved in the effort to overthrow the Perikatan Nasional government, the administration of the country led by Muhyiddin Yassin was still in the Dewan Rakyat.
“What happened was that Muhyiddin still got 112 (support from MPs) and could not be dropped during the debate on his removal.
“This means that Muhyiddin won and remained as prime minister.
“Anwar lost and did not become the prime minister. Anwar and I were rejected by Anwar because he already had enough support.
“But we all know that Anwar still cannot be the prime minister,” he said in a statement today.
In September, Anwar claimed that the “support and strong and convincing majority” of members of various parliamentary parties to form a new government, “a majority of the elected representatives of the Malays and Islam”.
Istana Negara, however, said that Anwar only submitted the number of members of the Dewan Rakyat who allegedly supported him, without submitting a list of names to strengthen the allegation.
Mahathir said he himself supported Pakatan Harapan (PH) ‘s efforts to bring down Muhyiddin, but the Anwar-led coalition refused to accept his participation.
“Efforts to overthrow the PN government are continued by PH. My party and supporters agree to join this effort. But Anwar completely rejected my participation.
“If I am rejected, my supporters will not join this proposal,” he said.
In fact, he said, Anwar also rejected the proposal of Amanah and DAP, which wanted him to return to the post of prime minister for a period of 6 months before handing over the post to Anwar.
“But Anwar refused. Anwar did not want me involved at all. My confession to hand over the post to Anwar after 6 months is not accepted or trusted, ”he said.
Mahathir also explained that he was not the one who prevented Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim from becoming the Prime Minister.
According to him, before this he did not think to support Anwar as Prime Minister because he was said to be disqualified due to certain factors.
However, he said, when Najib Razak became a kleptocrat, he was willing to work with Anwar to bring down Najib.
“I do not oppose the Pakatan Harapan (PH) proposal that Anwar will replace me when I resign.
“But it is not yet time for Anwar’s friends to urge me to resign,” he said in a post on his Facebook today.
