Ramkarpal Singh has slammed the proposal to bring back former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to lead the country’s administration for the third time.
The Bukit Gelugor Member of Parliament blamed Mahathir’s actions in the past as the cause of the current situation in the country.
He expressed his regret for having worked with him under Pakatan Harapan.
“I regret working with you. You are the reason why this country (in a situation like this) now. You are the reason why this country needs reform.
“And today you said you want to ‘save the country? You are the last person who can do it,” he said.
Ramkarpal commented on the proposal made by Pejuang for Mahathir to replace Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister until GE15.
Mahathir’s political secretary Abu Bakar Yahya said Pejuang party sponsoring committee have unanimously decided that Tun M is the prime ministerial candidate to replace the current prime minister pending the 15th general election.
After the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan administration last March, the coalition claimed it had enough Parliamentary seats to re-establish the government.
However, a decision could not be reached on who would be the prime minister.
Amid stalemate between Mahathir and PKR President Anwar Ibrahim, DAP and Amanah voiced support for the proposal for the former Bersatu chairman to once again lead the government.
DAP and Amanah also later supported Mahathir’s proposal for Warisan President Shafie Apdal to be the prime ministerial candidate. Anwar rejected the proposal.
In a statement today, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng – who urged Muhyiddin to focus on tackling the Covid-19 outbreak rather than the turmoil in the Perikatan Nasional – chose to avoid issues regarding DAP’s stance.
“I was asked by the media to comment on DAP’s stance on current political developments following the split between Perikatan Nasional and component parties as they were dissatisfied with the prime minister’s weakness in dealing with the Covid-19 health crisis.
“However, there is no need to state or repeat the party’s stance when the public longs for a government that is responsible for the interests of the country and the people, not just for the survival of individuals and their own politics,” he said.
Mahathir broke promises with Pakatan Harapan leadership
Meanwhile, Ramkarpal raised how Mahathir resigned earlier this year without discussing with the PH leadership and his promise for Anwar to replace him.
“He resigned as prime minister. He said this because he was said to have no majority at the time … Mahathir did not care to negotiate with his government or his Cabinet. He did it his own way.
“Now he wants to be prime minister again. As a Malaysian I ask myself, is there no one else?
“Will we appoint the same person who promised the country that he will hand over the baton to Anwar but today told us he is not suitable for the country?
“Why tell us if you at the time thought he (Anwar) was suitable? To get votes?”
Ramkarpal also evoked Mahathir’s past actions, especially during his first term as prime minister, including the arrest of government critics.
He said Mahathir promised a number of reforms before GE14. But he later said the promise was made when he did not expect to win.
“I used to believe it.
“Today he really wants a government without Anwar. It raises the question: Why did you lie in the past by promising him (prime minister) office?
“I respect what you did in the past. You destroyed the judiciary, the imprisonment of many people because they opposed you. Remember the Internal Security Act (ISA)?” he said.
