The Sarawak Coalition Party (GPS) cannot lose its mandate ‘for free’ if the 12th State Election (PRN-12) is not held when the Sarawak State Assembly (Dun) period ends in June next year.
Chief Minister Abang Johari Abang Openg said the Covid-19 pandemic cannot be used as an excuse not to hold state elections when the time comes.
He said GPS had a clear policy and believed in the power of the people in determining the government in line with democratic practices.
“We must hold a PRN because in the next five to six months, the Sarawak State Assembly period will end. That means the current government (GPS) no longer has the mandate to rule.
“Therefore, we must return it to the people’s power to determine the next government. I am very confident that GPS will continue to form the government,” he said.
He said this while officiating the Special Convention of the SUPP Parti Rakyat Bersatu (SUPP).
Abang Johari said, Sarawak needs a strong government to manage the Covid-19 pandemic.
“People are deeply affected by the pandemic, inluding our economy and development are affected.”
He said GPS needs a new mandate to establish a strong government to address the issue.
“I can assure that the best management of the Covid-19 pandemic in Sarawak during the election.” He is of the view that the state government will preserve the people.
Abang Johari said, it is important to restrict the presence of outsiders to Sarawak during the election period to curb the spread of the pandemic.
He also assured that GPS members of the United Bumiputera Pesaka Party (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Parti Demokratik Progresif (PDP) and SUPP will continue to give priority to the people when Covid-19 is hit and not just ‘playing’ politics -eyes.
“We in GPS pledge to work as a team not for the good of the party, but for the better future of Sarawak,” he said.
Forget intention to hold Sarawak state election
Last week, Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen urged Abang Johari to forget his intention to hold the Sarawak state election. Given the surge in the Covid-19 case in Sabah which took place after the PRN.
Sabah recorded 451 new cases yesterday and has reported 38 deaths in the last 10 days.
“The teaching of the Sabah state election is still fresh in everyone’s memory. Therefore, Abang Johari is irresponsible if he proposes to dissolve the Sarawak DUN and hold elections this year,” he said.
Chong said Sabah state elections were inevitable due to a coup attempt by former Sabah chief minister Musa Aman. But for Sarawak, the term would only end in June 2021. He said there was no attempt to bring down the GPS administration through the “back door”.
Therefore, he said, there is no need to rush to hold state elections at this time.
