Najib Razak said he is ready to forgive Dr Mahathir Mohamad if the former PPBM chairman wants to admit his mistake and apologizes to him first.
He said he believed that according to his religious practice, it is a demand to forgive someone.
“I think if he did something wrong or sinned against me, if he apologizes, I drive to religion, I forgive him.
But if he is not sorry, he will look for me at padang mahsyar later,” he was quoted as saying.
Najib admitted that he was quite angry with Mahathir for often uttering abusive words and baseless accusations against him.
“There is a sense of anger, that is inevitable because his words are too abusive, outrageous and baseless. It is difficult to accept by any human being.
“Indeed, I do not deny, I am quite angry in my heart, but as I said earlier, as a person who practices religion, then if he apologizes, I am ready to forgive.”
He did not rule out the possibility of Mahathir attacking and taking revenge on him because his son, Mukhriz, lost in the run-up to the vice-presidential election in the 2013 Umno election.
“Until today, I can only assume. If you look, it is probably the reason in the party election where Mukhriz lost the vice-presidential post, so he blamed me. ”
Asked if he was ready to face Mahathir, the Pekan MP said: “I do not see him wanting to meet me, many people say he has a dry heart. If that is his attitude, it is useless for us to meet. But if we come across it, we greet it normally. ”
Earlier last month, Mahathir said that he could not forgive Najib for allegedly destroying Umno.
“No, that’s different. I can’t forgive people who destroyed my party.
“That is what he (Najib) did, he really conveyed the hatred of Umno,” he said. Mahathir was responding to a question if he was willing to forgive Najib as he forgave PKR President Anwar Ibrahim.
It is Mahathir who ruins Umno
Najib also touched on the way Mahathir weakened the party in 1999 and money politics within the party.
He said Mahathir sparked anger among the Malays angry during the 1999 general election. This is because of the crisis by Anwar who was his deputy at the time.
“Barisan Nasional lost Malay support for Barisan Nasional and that saves time (is the) China and India. One of the reasons for Chinese riots in Indonesia that scares them here.”
However, he said, Chinese support for Barisan Nasional began to decline later due to anger at Mahathir. He said Mahathir failed to fulfill his promise by making a U-turn.
He said that Malay support for the Barisan Nasional recovered after Abdullah Ahmad Badawi was sworn in as prime minister. Barisan Nasional to win big at the 2004 general election, but the support is going down in 2008 due to the intervention that led to it missing Mahathir 2/3 majority in Parliament at the time.
Najib said that after taking over the administration of the country, he rectify the situation and regain Perak, Kedah and Terengganu, with Malay support for the Barisan Nasional, but the indignation of the Chinese remained until today.
He said money politics peaked in 1993 when Mahathir became prime minister.
“If at that time who was the representative, he knew those money politics was quite serious in the party.
“I made a rather radical change, where the election no longer involves 2,500 delegates, but 150,000 delegates at the divisional level, where the main purpose is to avoid money politics and ensure more democratic elections.”
