Political Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim won the People’s Justice Party (PKR) presidency uncontested on 5th August, he will be replacing his wife, the previous PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. The previous PKR president, Dr Wan Azizah is also the deputy prime minister who has held the position since founding of the in 1999. Although Anwar was always known as the PKR de factor leader since then.
Anwar’s PKR party is part of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition that won Malaysia’s 14th General Election (GE14). PKR party election committee secretary Ismail Yusof has made the announcement on Sunday 5th August, that there was only one nomination received for the presidency position that is from Anwar. Nominations for party polls were closed at 5pm. The candidates will be finalised after it has been displayed to allow for any objections to the candidates. Official results won’t be announced until 19th August.
According to PKR secretary-general Datuk Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, regardless of the outcome of the PKR polls, Dr Wan Azizah would remain as the Deputy Prime Minister. Saifuddin also said that according to a concensus reached in its National Convention, Anwar would only assume the Prime Minister’s position later, as Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would be Prime Minister and Dr Wan Azizah the Deputy Prime Minister.
Anwar would be next in line for prime minister after Dr Mahathir steps down. Anwar was Dr Mahathir’s deputy in 1990s but had a falling out during the 1997-99 Asian financial crisis. He was removed from the ruling party after challenging Dr Mahathir’s government. Anwar was arrested and jailed on disputed charges of sodomy and corruption. When he was freed in 2004, he was jailed a second time for sodomy in 2015, Anwar and his supporters said that both charges were politically motivated. However, after GE 14, Dr Mahathir has secured a royal pardon for Anwar and promised to step aside for him to become prime minister.
