Today, Sungai Kandis is having its by-election with 19 polling stations, involving 109 streams that has open since 8 am today to enable 51,217 to cast their votes. It will be a three-cornered fight involving PKR candidate Mohd Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, Datuk Lokman Noor Adam of BN and independent candidate K. Murthy. Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Tan Sri Othman Mahmood said in the mid of July that there is an expected voter turnout of 80 percent.
Othman reminds voters not to forget their identity cards when they go to the polling centres. He also said voters should verify the location and the voting channels and proceed to the designated channels to cast their votes. “We have increased the number of voting channels from the 88 channels in the 14th General Election to 109 channels for this by-election.” Othman added.
It has been a month since Sungai Kandis assemblyman Mat Shuhaimie Shafie has passed away after succumbing to lymphoma cancer. He was formerly the political secretary to Datuk Seri Azmin Ali when he was Selangor Menteri Besar. The passing of the PKR assemblyman is huge loss to Selangor and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), said the current Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari. The late Shuhaimi was a close companion in the ‘Reformasi’ struggle for the past 20 years he added.
According to the Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR), the results for the by-election will be out around 10 pm latest tonight. All voting stations will be closed at 5.30 pm today to allow the SPR to start counting the votes. Astro Awani reported this morning however, that the number of voters has dropped since 10 am this morning. BN Candidate Datuk Lokman said that judging by the voter turn out at the moment, the chance of less than an 80% voter turn out to be high.
Other reports related from to the by-elections is PKR candidate Zawawi has lodged a police report over slanderous statements. Zawawi has urged authorities to investigate a facebook and twitter account for spreading the slanderous statement. The two slanderous statements that Zawawi made separate reports for are against allegations that Zawawi supported a belly-dancing performance to collect donations for Tabung Harapan Malaysia and an alegation that he misappropriated funds while serving at a school in Sungai Bertih, Klang in 1998.
