Umno veteran leader Shahrir Abdul Samad has questioned the Perikatan Nasional’s decision to announce Muhyiddin Yassin’s candidacy as the coalition’s prime minister after the 15th general election.
He said, instead, Umno should be discussing the matters in regards to seat allocation for Barisan Nasional, Muafakat Nasional, or Perikatan Nasional in the elections.
“Do we have to solve the issue of prime minister candidacy first? Why is everything done in reverse? Shouldn’t we settle first on how Barisan Nasional, Muafakat Nasional and Perikatan Nasional will compete in the 15th general election?” he was quoted as saying today.
Shahrir, who is a former Johor MP, said that one of the important questions was whether they should go on their own way or in a group including the use of logos and symbols.
“Do we go each goes on our own? Or in the group as allies? Using only one symbol? So who is filling up the government post has been the first bid of the BN, Pas, PPBM, G10,” he said.
He added that this was similar to the offer made by former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to make Warisan President Shafie Apdal as the Prime Minister of Pakatan Harapan (PH) which was rejected by the PKR.
“New politics, not the new Malaysia. After the resignation of the prime minister, after that, we have to wait for another decision.
“What is the condition set by Muhyiddin after being nominated as prime minister’s candidate in the 15th general election?”
He said this in response to Umno’s statement and PAS had in principle, agreeing to continue supporting Muhyiddin as the Prime Minister’s candidate for the next general election.
Barisan Nasional and PAS leaders, together with parties from Sabah and Sarawak have pledged their loyalty with the Perikatan Nasional government led by prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin for the sake of political stability and people’s welfare.
The agreement was raised in a meeting among the Perikatan Nasional leaders (Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang, MCA president Wee Ka Siong, MIC president Vigneswaran and PPBM secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.
It was also attended by leaders from Sabah and Sarawak (PBB president Abang Johari Openg, SUPP president Dr Sim Kui Hian, PDP president Tiong King Sing, PBS president Maximus Ongkili, PBRS president Joseph Kurup and STAR president Jeffrey Kitingan.
Perikatan Nasional is a political coalition formed following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government under the leadership of Mahathir in March, which saw the appointment of the PPBM president as the new head of government.
On May 17, the PPBM, the Barisan Nasional, PAS, the Sarawak Party (GPS), PBS and STAR signed a memorandum of understanding confirming support for the Muhyiddin PN government.
PAS has also expressed its support towards Muhyiddin’s leadership as the prime minister. It president Abdul Hadi Awang said PAS also supported the political alliance of the Perikatan Nasional (PN) for the well-being of the nation and the people.
“At the same time, PAS expressed confidence in (Tan Sri) Muhyiddin as the prime ministerial candidate in the 15th General Election.”
