Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said it was not him who proposed for his son Mukhriz to be the deputy prime minister II should Pakatan Harapan regains the federal power.
He said the proposal made him, himself to be unsure to decide so. He acknowledged the fact that it would spark criticism from many people.
Saying that it was not his idea alone, he said it was already mentioned in a joint statement by Amanah president Mohamad Sabu and DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng to appoint Mukhriz the position.
“When I was the prime minister for the first time, I did not allow my son to be active in politics, specifically as a member of the ruling party.
“I did not want to be accused practicing nepotism, prioritizing my family,” he was quoted as saying.
However, Mahathir said he could not refuse Mukhriz’s appointment when he was no longer serve the country as the prime minister.
He said his son did not carry the responsibility of taking care of his name, saying they were politically independent.
“Whether they will succeed or not in politics, it depends on them,” he said.
Previously, Mahathir has revealed his proposal to nominate Shafie as the prime minister, which he said was agreed by a few leaders of Pakatan Harapan.
In addition, he said they had also agreed to nominate PKR President Anwar Ibrahim as Deputy Prime Minister 1, and his son Mukhriz Mahathir as Deputy Prime Minister 2.
“Someone might ask why Shafie was nominated. Some may have forgotten that Shafie was one of the original leaders against the kleptocratic Government since before the 14th general election.
“He was also one of the leaders who had been the victim of the Najib’s administration and had been ousted from the post of Umno Minister and Vice President for failing to accept corruption and theft of the people through the ridiculous 1MDB scandal,” he said.
He said that he believed that Shafie’s nomination would be able to restore the relationship between the peninsular and Sabah and Sarawak.
Mahathir said apart from casting a vote of no confidence in the Dewan Rakyat against Muhyiddin Yassin’s government, he would also support Shafie’s nomination to become prime minister.
“If this effort is successful, the steps to ensure that democracy is as demanding as we can be will be achieved. We must end the government that the people do not choose, ”he said.
Meanwhile, former prime minister Najib Razak said every decision made Mahathir was only to ensure his son’s position in politics, including the proposal to nominate Mukhriz as the deputy prime minister II.
“Pakatan Harapan minus (without PKR) unanimously endorsed Warisan President Shafie Apdal as prime minister, Anwar was deputy prime minister 1 and Mukhriz as deputy prime minister 2. Did I say that?
“Every path that the 7th prime minister has chosen will end with Mukhriz becoming deputy prime minister and eventually prime minister,” he said.
Najib also sarcastically congratulated Anwar for becoming the deputy prime minister once again, after 22 years of struggling and fighting.
