Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has mocked PPBM leaders and members for overthrowing the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government by colluding with leaders who were once labeled as ‘kleptocrats’ and thieves.
He also criticised the appointment of party president Muhyiddin Yassin as the prime minister, joining the opposition bloc to form a new government, the Perikatan Nasional (PN) with Barisan Nasional and PAS.
“It turns out that many Malaysians are willing to accept leaders who have stolen billions of government money.
“Among them are the leaders and members of PPBM who are ‘supposed’ to join PPBM for their intent to bring down the Prime Minister who stole billions of government money.
“They cooperated with the opposition party for the same purpose and the people gave them to victory because they believed in the sincerity of the party’s pledge to join their leaders,” he was quoted as saying.
The Langkawi MP said the unanimous actions of the PPBM leaders who joined the opposition coalition by wresting Pakatan Harapan does not only destroyed the party but also erode people’s confidence and faith toward the party.
“What other leaders in the PPBM will have to say? Will they be able to accept thieves as leaders?
“Can- as long as we can enjoy the benefit.
“What happened to the previous pledge to fight and defeat the kleptocratic leaders?
“Oh. That’s just a pledge to get the support of the voters. Now we can just forget about it, ” he said.
Kleptocrats is the title that Pakatan Harapan leader had previously given to Najib Razak’s administration in the wake of the 1MDB scandal.
Najib is currently in court on charges of money laundering involving billions of funds from the country’s companies.
For the record, the United is now seen split between groups supporting Muhyiddin and Mahathir following a political crisis that ended in late February, which led to Mahathir resigning as prime minister and replacing him with Muhyiddin.
Muhyiddin then formed the PN government with BN, PAS, GPS and the Sabah party to form a new government in place of PH.
It was following the announcement of Mahathir’s ‘automatic removal from the party he established in 2016 which took effect immediately.
Other than him, Mukhriz Mahathir, Amiruddin Hamzah, Maszlee Malik and Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman were also among the leaders who were sacked from the party.
It was announced by PPBM Work Secretary Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya.
Letters were sent to the five ‘sacked leaders’ and the decision was made after they refused to sit in the government bloc at a sitting of Parliament on May 18.
“At the Parliament sitting on May 18, 2020, YB Tun also joined and sat in the opposition block.
“It is therefore informed that pursuant to Clause 10.2.3 of the PPBM Constitution, YB Tun’s membership in the PPBM shall cease immediately,” he said in the letter.
Syed Saddiq claimed that it was against party law and that the party had indirectly denied their right to defend and to explain.
Explaining his position in the House of Representatives without the people of the National Alliance, Syed Saddiq opted to stand in the bloc against the opposition and the government.
“We agree to sit in the middle, free as PPBM MPs as this is our last stand for Parliament. The allegation that we sit in the Pakatan Harapan seat is completely incorrect.”
He also reminded PN that it was an “unofficial” coalition.
“Umno’s stand is the stand of MPs to support Muhyiddin. This is individual support, ”he said.
