Veteran statesman Daim Zainuddin said the new Perikatan Nasional government has betrayed the people’s mandate.
“My principles have not changed. This is a question of whether the alliance is valid or invalid.
“These parties can merge together to form an alliance. But to form a government is not in line with the wishes and mandates of the people.
“We must respect the mandate given by the people, the people vote for the Pakatan Harapan government to rule for five years or until the 15th general election. We must respect the wishes of the people.
“The establishment of the Perikatan Nasional does not respect the mandate,” he was quoted as saying.
Daim also raised the issue of racial imbalance in the new government, citing the appointment of MCA and MIC representatives in the cabinet only as “symbols” and “tokens”, because of their small number in parliamentary seats.
Although some MCA leaders have been appointed with positions in government-linked companies (GLCs), Daim said they have no voice in government affairs.
“So, who exactly represents the non-Malays in the government?” he questioned.
MCA has one representative in the cabinet and four deputy ministers and meanwhile MIC only has one ministerial portfolio in the Perikatan Nasional, consisting of three parties, namely the Malay-Muslims parties, PPBM, Umno and PAS.
Daim said the coalition between the PPBM, Umno and PAS would be tested in the next general election seat.
“I am not sure how an alliance (with three enemies) can satisfy their members.
“Will there be agenda (push and pull) between members disrupt the government machinery and disrupt all ministry initiatives planned for the people?” he said.
Recently, the Perikatan Nasional government has been threatened by a heated altercation between the PPBM and Umno, with PPBM claiming that Umno has dismissed them through political appointments in the government-linked companies.
Daim also commented on Mahathir’s resignation as prime minister on Feb 24, which ended the Pakatan Harapan administration after some 22 months in power.
Daim Zainuddin, who is known as a close friend and confidant of Mahathir, said the former prime minister should act fast, as soon as possible.
He was referring to the PPBM Supreme Council (MPT) meeting on the eve of Mahathir’s resignation.
“It’s not easy to say whether he made a mistake or not. […] It’s not like he has much time.
“He needs to make a decision as soon as possible.
“Now that you look at all the information, it’s easy to say, he was wrong, or he was not.
“But at that time – and when he was pressured from all directions – was it a mistake? We are not in his position at that time, ”he said.
Mahathir’s resignation was made after PPBM President Muhyiddin Yassin announced that party’s departure from the Pakatan Harapan coalition.
Muhyiddin was eventually appointed as prime minister with the new Perikatan Nasional government while the PPBM was split into two camps.
Daim also questioned the rising number of politicians appointed into the government-linked companies and government-linked investment companies (GLIC) under Muhyiddin’s coalition.
Daim said, while political appointments to the GLC and the GLIC were common, Daim said it has become “extraordinary” when there were too many appointments which he said was made “by mistakes”.
“Many people see this as a blatant attempt to buy political support,” he said.
