MCA president Wee Ka Siong has described Chinese voters’ political support towards Perikatan Nasional as drastically swirling.
As such, he cited Barisan Nasional’s victory in Tanjung Piai constituency where the votes increased to 65% in the last by-election from 30% during the 14th general election.
“The change is huge, obviously because of the anger,” he was quoted as saying with an interview with Malay newspaper.
Wee said the Chinese were angry with the PH government earlier because of the business factor they were causing.
“No one said their business performance was doing good, everything was bad. No decision, for example, the decision on tender is made (changed) two to three times.
“Bumiputera contractors are unable to get projects while goods are supplied from the Chinese stores.
“So not only the Malay contractors are suffering, but the Chinese already suffer also because of the chain effect which had caused all the affected parties,” he said.
Wee also claimed that under the PH administration, local council members were quarreling with each other and competing over contracts.
“When they couldn’t get it (the contract), they finally made the decision to destroy it.
“Therefore, the Chinese people are appealing for the government to work, to restore the economy while PH is still a government,” he added.
Therefore, he warned that although MCA won the Tanjung Piai by-election, it could face defeat in the next election.
He said it is important to do their best to protect the interests of the people and solve various problems including the issue concerning the cost of living which he believes is the biggest challenge today.
Wee Ka Siong also said that Muhyiddin is leading the government for all Malaysians, saying that he refused to hear people saying that the nation is the Malay-Muslim government.
“I am here to assist the prime minister and the cabinet in describing Malaysia’s prosperity.
“We are here to play an important role in achieving social stability and well-being of the people regardless of race,” he added.
Wee is the only Chinese national representative to be appointed minister in Muhyiddin’s cabinet as the transport minister.
He defended the formation of the Perikatan Nasional government, saying that it was not a conspiracy or a coup.
“This is not a conspiracy. This is an internal conflict, they (PH) have been fighting for a long time and that is the climate.
“From the MCA’s point of view, the cause is due to Amanag and DAP with (PKR President) Anwar Ibrahim,” he said.
Wee said he was impressed by the maturity of Malaysian democracy when the transition power took place without bloodshed.
Wee said that when BN lost in the 2018 general election, the coalition accepted and respected the people’s decision.
“It is true that the people do not support us (BN), so we respect the people’s decision (in the 2018 general election).
“On the other hand, when people give PH a mandate to govern, suddenly after 22 months of the same system is used, whoever has the support of at least 112 MPs, then he will be prime minister and this is our system that need not be disputed its authenticity,” he said.
