The Malaysian Chinese founder and chairman of Rimbunan Hijau Group, Tan Sri Datuk Tiong Hiew King, started the timber company back in 1975. His overseas logging operations went as far as Russia and Papua New Guinea, the latter being the largest in its country.
Tiong has a net worth of US$1.1 billion since March 2018 according to Forbes.
Tan Sri Datuk Tiong currently resides in a town in Sarawak called Sibu, located in the Malaysian Borneo Island.
Sin Chew Daily and Guang Ming Daily, the two major Chinese national dailies in Malaysia, are ran by Tiong’s Rimbunan Hijau Group. The National Daily in Papua New Guinea and Ming Pao Holdings Ltd from Hong Kong are also operated by the Rimbunan Hijau Group.
Tiong started Ming Pao Enterprises, a global Chinese publishing group, which is available across San Francisco, New York, Vancouver and Toronto.
After merging Ming Pao Enterprise Corporation Limited, Sin Chew Media Corporation Berhad and Nanyang Press Holdings Berhad, the Media Chinese International Limited (MCIL), the holding company for all of Tiong’s media assets, was born.
Back in 2018, Tiong decided to taka part in a non-executive, non-independent directorship of the group, stepping down from the position of executive chairman of MCIL.
Tiong and his family back in Sibu are currently members of the Sarawak United People’s Party(SUPP). Tiong Thai King, Tion Hiew King’s younger brother, was on board the Lanang Parliamentary Constituency in Sibu as The Member of Parliament, since 1995 till 2013/
Tiong was granted the honor of being an honorary Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire back in 2009.
