Kuan Kam Hon is the founder and chairman of Hartalega Holdings, one of the world’s largest producers of nitrile rubber.
He is ranked 10th on Forbes’ 2018 list of Malaysia’s 50 richest with a net worth of $2.7billion.
Kuan is a self-made billionaire. He started out working for his father’s company when it was focusing mainly one property development.
Through good foresight, he ventured into manufacturing of rubber gloves which remains as its main source of wealth to present day.
Before he became the self-made billionaire he is today, Kuan Kam Hon was a high school drop-out who began his career in building and construction back in 1969. Sounds familiar?
During this time, he worked at his father’s company building high-end homes around Kuala Lumpur.
Back in 1978, he ventured off on his own and started his first business, Timol Weaving.
It was a manufacturing business that made woven labels and badges.
Soon after, Hartalega Holdings was founded by Kuan Kam Hon back in 1981. It is the world’s largest and fastest maker of nitrile gloves, which it exports to 40 countries.
It has the reputation of having the most efficient automated system which reportedly could produce about 45,000 units hourly. Besides that, Hartalega has been performing better than other more renowned brands , even brands like Top Glove.
It operates 6 manufacturing gloves. This is considered as a remarkable achievement considering that it started out in 1969 as a property development unit. A truly remarkable milestone.
Today, Hartalega mostly export its products to North America and other countries.
He is now a mentor and spokesman, leaving operations to his two sons.
So the bottom line is you don’t necessarily have to be an A student to make it big in life, though it would be good bonus. You just need the determination and the will to succeed in life.
