It was a lovely morning, Legacy Times team is over the moon to meet Wendy Woon, the owner of Classico Design & Home Deco. Before the interview starts, she walks in gracefully with her charming voice and greets with us, “Good morning!”
Running her own business since 2008, Wendy Woon, the owner of Classico has been working as a “window dresser” for 11 years. With her delicate sense of interior and hardworking personality, Wendy is also a perfectionist who seeks perfection in every project.
Before she runs her own business, Wendy was an apprentice at a local fabric store in KL. She provided excellent customer service with her friendly personality and her services earned her loyal customers who have been followed her since then until today.
“I treat every customer in a way that I wish myself could be treated, there were few occasions when the store was about to close and customers approached for curtain designs consultation, most people would have rejected the customer and ask them to come back tomorrow, but not for me. I let them in and provide my service, no matter how late at night it will be, I will provide my service if they need my consultation.”
Her hard work has earned her reputation, loyalty and assurance. Not just good at sales talk, Wendy also well-exposed to the fabric industry and able to find out what’s lacking in the industry. She took it as a reference and then proceeded into a partnership business with a friend who was once her client.
“Back in those days, there is a lack of consistencies in curtain production. The person who provides the measurement will not deal with designs and that could be fatal. You would not know whether the design suits the customer’s home unless you conduct the site inspection yourself. The inconsistencies of communication had caused many corrections to be done and such a prolonged process affects efficiency.”
Knowing thoroughly to the core problems, Wendy decided to conduct personal site inspections to every clients’ house for her business. Her knowledge of the industry and experiences allowed her to provide the most accurate measurement upon the first-time site inspect, and the second visit is when the curtains are ready to setup.
“I will make sure there will be no room for error to my measurement because if that so I will have to spend more time to reinspect, re-measuring and that could cause lots of inconveniences to my client. And of course, by doing so you ceased to seem professional in the eyes of your client. That’s the most undesirable situation that I would never let myself happen.”
Her partnership business nevertheless went downfall due to disagreements and she described that was the “darkest” period in her career.
“When one door closes, another opens”, the idiom very much applicable in her situation. Her son encouraged her to step out of the comfort zone by picking up a new venture, self-business indeed.
Desperately wanted a new beginning, the journey of Classico has begun.
The beginning of Classico
Intend to carry Italian romantic lifestyle, Classico means to inspire and bring up the desirable classical lifestyle to everyone, and Wendy, later on, shared further of Classico’s behind the scene.
“Till today, I will attend clients’ house personally to do measurement as I want to make sure all the measurements are fast and accurately recorded. Time is of the essence, after I completed the inspection, I will head back to the office and get the design template done according to prior measurement as soon as possible. By doing so, I minimise the chances of making mistakes and shorten the production period.”
While Wendy sharing her experiences, we noticed the sparkles in her eyes and felt her excitement when she talks about her job, make us wonder how she managed to keep her passion after doing the same thing over a decade.
“Being a window-dresser, you are not just dealing with clients, you are the designer of the living space. Having a suitable curtain for a home living is like giving aesthetics, and you must not let your client drive you in.”
“Some clients will walk in and state their desire designs, that’s very good of them. However, if I could have foreseen the consequences of not being able to bring out the best aesthetics, I would reject it. I would tell my clients the truth rather letting them disappoint after all the so-called ‘pleasant communication’. When people merely seek for a solution, they will miss out on something.”
Seeking perfection in every curtain she did, she will provide her genuine and honest consultation based on her client’s budget and requirements. Instead of getting into a price war, Wendy keeps her standard high and her work speaks for herself.
During the interview, we tried to ask if there are any “standard pricing” for her services or fabric chosen. However, Wendy merely standardised an inspection fee and never set “minimum spend” for the client’s order.
“I will work out different options based on the client’s budget, I believe everyone deserves to live in a beautiful space and the value of having a lifestyle doesn’t necessarily require big money. It is all about preferences, my job is to bring out the beauty of their house and beauty does not mean luxurious price, it’s the atmosphere matters most.”
The journey of a “Window dresser”
Asking how Wendy position herself in this competitive market, she addressed herself as a “window dresser”, neither specialist nor consultant.
“A home is like our human body, we love to wear a nice dress to bring out the best of us. Similar to a fashion stylist, I’m a “window-dresser” who dress up home living area instead of humans.”
Life as a personal “window dresser” might not be as easy as we think. Wendy’s daily life is swarmed with appointments and meetings, yet her passion over what she has been doing for the past decade never fade along the years yet grew tougher. She’s so excited to share her client’s project with us through her smartphone gallery. So what keeps her persistence? Definitely passion.
Behind the “dressing” scene
Throughout the 11 years, Wendy works as a “window dresser” to provide personalised curtain fitting services with her powerful back-end team, the manufacturer who had worked with her since day one. The seamless chemistry between them enables them to create lots of “magical moment”.
“There was a client who got a very urgent deal that he wants the curtain to be set within one week time. Without hesitation, I accepted the offer. Because I am confident with the quality of my idea and I have a team who has been working with me for the past 11 years. They are the best team that I can ever think of and I’m glad to have them with me all these years, we have achieved many great things in this journey so far. Even though sometimes I would get picky over quality yet they will do their best to fit my requirements because striving for quality is always our forte.”
Concluded our interview, we realised that there are no special skills in maintaining a business, it’s all about passion and persistence. Most of the time, we thought business is just business until we get to know the stories behind. Leaving with a contented heart, we know that we definitely can expect greater stories from Wendy soon.
